Choosing between them
- Dashboard or admin panel?
- The first is for reading and deciding; the second is for changing. If the question is “what is happening?” it is a dashboard; if it is “how do I edit this?” it is an admin panel. Plenty of products need both, and we design them as two jobs rather than one crowded screen.
- Client portal or web application?
- A portal is a controlled window onto data you already hold. A web application is a product in its own right, with its own users and release cycle. The difference shows up in permissions: a portal starts from “what are they allowed to see?”
- Dashboard or business system?
- A dashboard displays what has been recorded. If the data is not being recorded at all, what you need first is the system that records it — the dashboard comes after.
